Overview of the "Greatest Show on H2O"
The Winterfest Boat Parade is recognized globally as one of the top holiday events in the United States. Spanning 12 miles along the Fort Lauderdale Intracoastal Waterway, the parade starts at the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale and travels east to the Intracoastal Waterway, proceeding north all the way to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach.
Vessels ranging from 20-foot private fishing boats to 130-foot multi-deck superyachts participate each year. Each boat is embellished with hundreds of thousands of LED lights, animated holiday figures, live bands, and celebrity grand marshals.
Parade Route & Key Spectator Locations
Choosing the right viewing spot is vital due to heavy local attendance and bridge closures during the 2.5-hour procession:
- Hugh Taylor Birch State Park: Offers grandstand seating and premium views right along the Intracoastal.
- Downtown New River Riverwalk: Ideal for seeing the parade start close-up, surrounded by downtown dining and festivities.
- Las Olas Boulevard Bridge Area: High energy viewing zone, though foot traffic and parking are dense.
Bridge Closure Schedule for Drivers
All drawbridges along the 12-mile route close sequentially as the lead vessel approaches. Key bridges impacted include Seventh Avenue Bridge, Andrews Avenue Bridge, 3rd Avenue Bridge, Las Olas Boulevard Bridge, Sunrise Boulevard Bridge, Commercial Boulevard Bridge, and 14th Street Causeway Bridge.
